It’s funny how inspiration works…

This was a painting that I started 8 years ago - back in 2014! I was really happy with how the barcode turned out, but I got stuck and couldn’t figure out how to finish the piece. It has been sitting in my pile of work-in-progress canvases ever since. 

Fast forward to 2022... I woke up at 5am one Saturday morning feeling totally confident about how to finish this painting. It was literally like a lightbulb went on! I started painting immediately and didn't stop for 12 hours. Then I woke up the next morning and did it again. After a solid 24 hours of painting, it was finally completed. 

Now Is The Time is the fourth painting from my Recycling Project series. It was created on one of the very few canvases that I have ever stretched myself. I originally used this canvas for a home decor project circa 2000 (way before I ever started painting!). It was stretched onto wood that my Dad had laying around, so it has rounded edges instead of squared. 

I covered this canvas with pages from an old Russian book (my family has Russian roots). I think the Russian alphabet looks neato - but had I known what the current political climate would be, I probably would've covered the canvas in something else! Also, full disclosure - I have no idea what the book says. 

To complete this painting, I scrapped the numbers that I had originally spray painted on and replaced them with a strips of gradient fading colours. I then extended the original barcode into the upper section of the canvas. The edges have been finished with black paint. Now Is The Time is signed by the artist on the front and back.
