Wow! September already. The last three months have absolutely flown by... I spent almost every day this summer working 12 hours a day in my studio creating two brand new series of paintings that I will be debuting at Lake Country's ArtWalk this weekend. I. CAN'T. WAIT. As most of you know, I am a self-taught artist. I have been painting for 15+ years and my style has always been kind of “eclectic”… I play around with a variety of styles and my work is always evolving. Painting has been such an important part of my life’s journey and an invaluable outlet for me to express myself over the years. In 2016, I went back to school. I studied business and got a degree in marketing. If we’re being honest, I’ll admit that I’ve always felt a little intimidated by artists with BFAs and MFAs. I secretly assumed their art must be better than mine, they must be more talented than me, etc. I considered going to art school instead of business school but chose the “boring option" because I didn’t see art as a viable career path. Art was a hobby, not a business. After getting my degree, the Universe naturally led me back to painting (as it always does) and I started to see art in a different way. One thing I’ve learned is the importance of having a “signature style”. This is likely Art School 101 - but it never really occurred to me! After this realization, I made it my mission to create a cohesive body of work that would convey to the world who I am as an artist. I have spent the last three months creating two new series of paintings that are uniquely mine. These bold conversation pieces incorporate colorful barcodes and satisfy my love of organized color. TV TEST CARD SERIESMy TV Test Card series are retro-inspired pieces that feature colorful barcodes and patterns used in the old TV test screens from the 80s and 90s. As an 80s kid, I have distinct childhood memories of the TV test screens interrupting my beloved Saturday morning cartoons... My entertainment was at the mercy of the cable company! (I think anyone born pre-Internet can relate!) As an offshoot from my Recycling Project series, many my TV Test Card paintings were created on recycled (previously used) canvases, so each original has unique surface textures. My TV Test Card paintings are sure to bring nostalgia and good conversation wherever they go. BARCODE LANDSCAPESThe other new series I created this summer is Barcode Landscapes. I instantly fell in love. My Barcode Landscape paintings begin with a to-scale sketch of a reference photo and come to life using colorful barcodes and gradient fading effects. I am currently focused on building my portfolio of Barcode Landscape paintings and am accepting commission orders now. If you have a cherished photo of your favorite place, commission me to turn it into a beautiful Barcode Landscape painting!
