This is a post about the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick - 1 of 13 paintings in my 2024 Canadian Landscape series. If you would like to read about the series as a whole, you can find that post here.

Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick (2023) - part of my Canadian Landscape series

Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick was the fourth painting I completed from my Canadian Landscape series. It was completed in July 2023.

My goal for this series was to capture the essence of each province and territory in a painting. I will admit that I don't know too much about most of the provinces in Canada. I had to do a lot of research to discover what was unique about each province and what they were known for.

The Hopewell Rocks located in the Bay of Fundy was a place that stuck out as unique to me about New Brunswick. These fascinating rock formations are known as sea stacks and are caused by tidal erosion. What makes them even more unique is that they have trees growing on top!

I wasn't able to find one photo that captured the Bay of Fundy perfectly for my painting, so I ended up using a compilation of a few different images including these two photos from Unsplash.

My New Brunswick painting was one of the pieces that I struggled with more than others from this series. Some photos show the Hopewell Rocks as a rusty orange color, so this is initially how I tried to paint them. They looked terrible! The orange didn't provide the contrast I was after. I then tried a greyscale palette and this worked out much better.
I also struggled with figuring out how to apply the paint to the rocks to make them look sufficiently three-dimensional, while remaining consistent with my "barcode landscape" style.
This was my first barcode landscape painting where I used horizontal lines in the sky rather than vertical lines, and I think this worked well for allowing the rocks to be the star of the show.

The next painting I completed from this series was Tombstone Park, Yukon.
