Canadian Landscape Series - Painting 2 of 13: Old Quebec City, Quebec

Old Quebec City, Quebec

Old Quebec City, Quebec (2023), part of my Canadian Landscape series

​Old Quebec City, Quebec was the second painting I completed from my Canadian Landscape series. It was completed in May 2023.

My goal for this series was to capture the essence of each province and territory in a painting. The province of Quebec is incredibly rich in cultural heritage. Old Quebec City was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985 and the city boasts very unique, castle-like architecture.

I knew immediately that Old Quebec City was what I wanted to paint for Quebec.

For me, it was imperative that I included the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac (one of the most photographed hotels in the world), along with the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec, the Louis St. Laurent Building, and the Funiculaire du Vieux-Quebec - an elevator linking the upper and lower levels of the city. 

For the "bones" of this painting, I used a reference photo from Pexels taken by Emeric Laperriere. This photo had all the elements I wanted to include in my painting, and allowed me to ensure they were to scale. 

My Old Quebec City painting came together relatively easily... I didn't get stuck on anything for too long. The biggest challenge for me was completing all of those tedious freehand details - like the windows on buildings, the trees, and the tiny cross on top of the cathedral (so cute!).
